March

1st Week of March

Landscape Projects

  • Start thinking about the different projects you would like to do this year.
  • Don’t have the time, equipment, or even know where to start? Call Stuart’s today and set up an appointment with one of our knowledgeable designers. We’re happy to assist you.

2nd Week of March

Prune

  • Prune summer and fall blooming shrubs now, including spirea, potentilla, weigelia, hydrangeas. Late winter pruning will not interfere with summer flowering and allows the plants to recover quickly.

Cabin Fever?

  • To cure cabin fever, step inside the greenhouse in Fond du Lac and see our wide selection of annuals that we are growing just for you.

3rd Week of March

Cleanup

  • Rake up left over leaves from the fall and winter.

4th Week of March

Perennials

  • Cut down ornamental grasses to 6-10 inches above the soil line.
  • Cut any other perennials left up for winter interest.

Fruit Trees

  • Looks for dead wood, crossing branches, and suckers. Make your cuts close to a bud, branch joint, or trunk. Try not to leave a stub as this harbors insects. Keep in mind to let more light into the tree for better fruit formation. Keep more horizontal branches and prune more vertical branches. After you are done pruning you can apply dormant oil if you experienced problems with mites and scale last year.
